The Oedipus Complex was painted in gouache five years after Bourguignon arrived in Columbus. Its style is reminiscent of Belgian Expressionists Gustave De Smet and Fritz Van den Berghe. Their work was prominent in Brussels in the 1920s and heavily influenced Paul’s artwork.
