The Laundress was painted in gouache seven years after Bourguignon arrived in Columbus. Its style is reminiscent of Belgian Expressionists Gustave De Smet and Fritz Van den Berghe. Their work was prominent in Brussels in the 1920s and heavily influenced Paul’s artwork.
