At the Opera is an example of Bourguignon’s painting style in the early 1950s. The heavy dark outline is reminiscent of Flemish Expressionist artists’ artwork from the 1920s–30s such as by the artists Constant Parmeke and Gustave De Smet. This style was characterized by somber colors, and depictions of sturdy figures with a bold outline. This figure is not idealized.
